Please answer below. What are you thinking, what are you feeling when your dog is showing you tracking? I’d like to hear a response from each and every one of you.
When it comes to thinking during tracking, I want to be supportive of Skyler and simply enjoy watching him. Since I am still new to tracking, I try to remind myself not to crowd him and to ensure he stays on track, so I don't interfere with his progress.
As for my feelings, I am truly amazed by how well Skyler performs and how excited he gets about staying on track. I'm really looking forward to working with him more as a team and can't wait to help build his confidence as we get more experience.
I am so glad i asked this, and thank you all for responding. For me, it’s usually awe, followed quickly by joy. I am constantly amazed at their ability, at being able to see their world as they see it, and being in awe leads to joy that I get to participate in this with them. It thrills me to see you guys feeling it too. I actually love watching your videos, in large part because I love watching your dogs ‘get it.’ And I hope you enjoyed thinking about this! Please, take the time to feel the joy!
First, joy & gratitude that Brie is on the track! Then trying to watch for circling, casting, etc, or continued confidence on her part. I TRY not to let the ever-present doubts in our abilities creep in, or, as Kara said, get caught up in the "look at her go!" and blow it. I do try to remember that finding/staying on the track is her job, and following/supporting her is mine ...
Elation mixed with steady calmness along with reinforcement ...in large part because when Mila shows tracking behavior, she's also showing (for lack of better words) her own enjoyment with the experience which in turn feeds back to me and so on. It means we are communicating effectively...and that I've gotten out of the way a bit or am supporting her correctly. I reminds me of the same feeling I'd get when riding :).
I hope it’s okay if I answer even if I am no longer tracking but I still remember the feelings so well.
It is a Zen feeling but my senses feel like they are hyper aware. Totally aware of the environment, the breeze on my cheek, the downward slope of the land.
It’s a conversation with my dog and the line is our means of communication. A slight tightening of the line by me asks “Are you sure?” A burst of speed by him as he says “Hell Yeah!”
No talk but a constant conversation going on through that line.
